Two on one: This is the magic formula we got to know the last time. We connected Mobile Station devices item no. 60657 or item no. 60653 with a track box (e.g. item no. 60116). One of the devices is the boss. This device is also referred to as the master. This device has the following tasks:

  • All locomotives we want to use for playing together need to be set up in the internal locomotive list.
  • If we want to add new mfx models to our playing, these have to be set up with the master.
  • If a locomotive needs to be reprogrammed, this is done with the master.

All other possibilities are identical with both devices. Both can adopt any locomotive from the internal list of the master into the own active locomotive list. From there, this locomotive can be recalled and controlled. This means that the speed is changes, that the direction of travel can be switched or that the integrated functions of the locomotive are turned on or off. In this way, up to 16 functions can be switched.

However, before we deepen this topic, we should take a closer look at the "internal locomotive list". This locomotive list contains all locomotives from the own inventory. Up to 40 of such locomotive entries can be made into this list.

Therefore, this internal list works like a phone book of a smartphone. In a smartphone's phone book any data of friends, acquaintances etc. is stored for future contacting. You don't have to tediously memorize the telephone number of the conversation partner. It is stored in the list of contacts. We invoke the contacts entering keywords we can distinguish well. For example, "Home" features the data for the fixed-line connection of your home. "Robby Mobile", on the other hand, stands for the mobile phone number of a good friend.

The entries into the internal list should be regarded and made the same way. For every entry you select a name you can easily remember. "Address 47" is surely more difficult to remember than the name "Red Racer", if this designation is anyway much wanted for one of the vehicles. 

When setting up a locomotive in the MS 2, the entry is not only made into the active list, where up to 10 entries can be shown in the display, but also and always into the internal list. When carrying out the function "Enable locomotive", the locomotive currently recalled is removed from the active locomotive list. However, the entry in the internal locomotive list will remain. If, in contrast to that, the function "Delete locomotive" is used, the relative entry will be deleted from both locomotive lists.

What is the advantage of these two lists? Initially, the MS 2 only featured the active locomotive list. Those having more than 10 locomotives, encountered the problem that, while playing, locomotives had to be set up over and over again, if those were to be used in the game again.

In case of the mfx locomotive, you only had to wait for a short while. However, in the case of a locomotive which was controlled via the MM or DCC signal, this had always to be carried out manually. Even all other changes, as e. g. the assignment of functions, an address differing from the serial condition, the desired name etc. had to be tediously restored with these models. Only the use of a locomotive card n. 60135 represented a way for shortening this procedure.

Now, the procedure is much easier with the internal list. I set up my entire vehicle fleet in the internal list. When setting up a locomotive in the active list, I now not only have the possibility to set up a locomotive manually or from the database, but also to select the locomotive from this locomotive list. In practice, this is the most elegant and fastest way. This locomotive list of the master is available to all connected MS 2 devices. Therefore, all locomotives of your own vehicle fleet can be recalled and controlled via any MS 2. However, we will go into detail in the next episode.
